Common Issues

Solutions for common problems when using ClawRun.

Sandbox won't start

Symptom: clawrun start returns an error or the sandbox stays stuck.

Possible causes:

  • Instance not deployed. clawrun start requires a fully deployed instance. If you see "Instance is not fully deployed", run clawrun deploy first. It handles all Vercel project creation, environment variables, and state store setup automatically.
  • Creation lock held. A previous start attempt may have left a lock in Redis. The lock auto-expires after 60 seconds. Wait and retry.
  • Health check timeout. The sidecar has 15 seconds to report a healthy daemon. If this fails, ClawRun reads the sidecar log from inside the sandbox and includes it in the error output. Check for agent startup issues in that output.

Agent daemon keeps crashing

Symptom: The sidecar reports repeated daemon restarts in heartbeats.

Possible causes:

  • Invalid API key. The agent can't authenticate with the LLM provider. Verify your provider and API key. You can reconfigure them by redeploying with clawrun deploy.
  • Missing binary. The agent binary wasn't provisioned correctly. Run clawrun destroy and redeploy.

The sidecar allows up to 5 restarts before reporting "failed" status. The counter resets after 60 seconds of stable operation. Once failed, the lifecycle manager stops the sandbox.

Webhook messages not arriving

Symptom: Messages sent via Telegram, Discord, or Slack don't reach the agent.

Check:

  1. The webhook URL is correct: https://<your-deployed-url>/api/v1/webhook/<channel>
  2. The webhook secret matches what's configured in ClawRun
  3. The deployed app is accessible (try visiting the URL in a browser)
  4. For local development, ensure ngrok is running and the URL is up to date

Sandbox snapshots failing

Symptom: The sandbox stops but doesn't resume properly on wake.

Possible causes:

  • Redis unreachable. The state store connection is down. Check that your KV_URL or REDIS_URL environment variables are set correctly in your Vercel project. These are provisioned automatically during clawrun deploy.
  • Snapshot storage full. Check your provider's storage limits. ClawRun keeps the 3 most recent snapshots and deletes older ones automatically.
  • All snapshot retries failed. Snapshots are retried up to 3 times. If all fail, the sandbox is kept running to preserve state. Check clawrun logs for details.

Slow sandbox wake

Symptom: The agent takes several seconds to respond after being idle.

This is expected. When the sandbox is sleeping, waking involves creating a new sandbox from the snapshot, starting the sidecar and agent daemon, and verifying health. The wake time depends on the sandbox provider.
